Why Your Weight Stopped Moving on a GLP-1

You have not changed a thing. You are hitting your protein. You are doing your training. You have been deliberate and consistent for weeks.

And the weight has stopped moving.

So you start doing the arithmetic. Eat a bit less. Add some cardio. Wonder what you are doing wrong.

You are not doing anything wrong. Here is what is actually happening.

What is a plateau, really?

A plateau is your body adapting, in real time, to what you are doing to it.

Your body wants to be the most efficient machine it can be in whatever environment it finds itself, including a severe one. So when you have had a good run of losses and then it simply stops, what has happened is that the part of your brain responsible for energy balance recognised the threat, got smarter, and got more efficient.

A plateau is not a failure. It is adaptation, in motion.

It does that in specific ways. It lowers your core temperature. It slows your heart rate. It demotivates you, so that all you want to do is lie down. And it preferentially wastes off as much muscle as it can get away with, because muscle is expensive to run.

None of that is punishment. All of it is strategy.

Which part of the brain is doing this?

The hypothalamus. It sits below the thalamus, in the oldest part of the brain, near the fundamental machinery that regulates your breathing and your heart rate.

It regulates sleep and waking, hunger and fullness, and a great deal else. It is extremely sensitive to what is going on around it. It knows when you are cold, when it is night, when you are hungry, when you are full.

But is it smart? No. It really is not. It does not know what you weigh. All it knows is that it wants to defend your weight. It does not matter to it whether that weight is 125 pounds or 300 pounds. It wants to defend it.

Why it cannot tell a diet from a famine

Because that part of your brain cannot tell the difference between you taking a medication on purpose and you starving on the high desert a hundred thousand years ago. It reacts the same way to both.

Think about the equipment you were issued and what it was designed to do. Go back hundreds of thousands of years, to when we first came down from the trees. We were living in a harsh environment, mostly scavenging. Some marrow from a carcass was a good find. Some nuts were a good day. Actually catching something meant you feasted, and then it might be days or weeks before anything that good happened again.

Think about how severely efficient a body has to be to survive that. No reliable food. No guaranteed shelter. You get up with the sun, you spend the day looking for food and water, and you try not to be eaten.

That blueprint has not caught up to twenty-first century American life. It does not know how to cope with a drive-through, or with food available around the clock. It is still extracting energy from everything as efficiently as it ever did, except now we commute by car, live in air conditioning and sit at a desk.

That is the equipment. Survival at all costs, getting more efficient every day, especially when there is an energy deficit.

How fast should you be losing anyway?

One to two pounds a week. I learned that in a high school health class and it still holds.

I do not like seeing people lose twenty pounds in a month. That is alarming, and it is exactly the kind of rate that sets this whole response off. Losing too fast is one of the surest ways to trigger the adaptation that then stalls you.

So is a plateau a failure?

No.

It does not mean your treatment does not work. It does not mean you are bad at weight loss. It means your body is behaving exactly the way it was designed to behave.

That is genuinely a bummer, because it is not in line with your goals. But it is not failure. It is evidence that you are normal.

What it is, is a signal to adjust. Not a signal to quit, and not a signal to cut harder, which usually makes it worse.
