A Gen Z wake-up call from a board-certified endocrinologist
Let me guess.
You’re tired. Like, all the time tired. Not the “I stayed up too late” tired — the “I slept 8 hours and still can’t function” tired.
You crash hard after lunch. Brain fog hits by 2pm like clockwork. You’re hungry again 30 minutes after eating. And you’re gaining weight even though you haven’t changed anything.
You’ve Googled it. You’ve tried the hacks. You’ve blamed yourself.
And somewhere in the back of your mind, you’re thinking: I’m only 24. Why do I feel like I’m falling apart?
Here’s the truth nobody’s telling you: You’re not lazy. You’re not broken. But something IS happening inside your body, and it’s probably been happening for years.
The silent problem no one’s checking for
Let’s talk about pre-diabetes.
I know. That word sounds like something your grandpa has. But here’s the reality:
1 in 5 young adults already has pre-diabetes, and most have no idea.
Why? Because pre-diabetes doesn’t wave a red flag. There’s no dramatic moment. No obvious symptom that screams “GO SEE A DOCTOR.”
Instead, it whispers.
That post-meal crash? Whisper. The brain fog? Whisper. Hungry right after eating? Whisper. Weight creeping up for no reason? Whisper.
By the time most people get diagnosed, it’s been silently brewing for years. Your body has been screaming, you just didn’t know how to hear it.
The condition behind all of this? Insulin resistance.
Your cells stop responding to insulin the way they should. So your body pumps out more. And more. And you end up on this exhausting glucose roller coaster — spiking, crashing, spiking, crashing — all day long.
The good news? Caught early, it’s reversible.
The bad news? Most doctors aren’t even checking for it in young patients.
Your Phone Is Wrecking Your Metabolism (And It’s Not About Your Eyes)
Okay, I know you’ve heard “screen time is bad” a thousand times.
But this isn’t about blue light. This isn’t about your posture. This isn’t about your attention span.
This is about your blood sugar.
Here’s what the research shows:
Every hour of screen time over two hours reduces your insulin sensitivity by about 5%.
That means your body gets progressively worse at processing sugar the more time you spend scrolling.
And the average Gen Z person? 7 to 9 hours of screen time. Every. Single. Day.
Do the math. That’s a massive metabolic hit, day after day, week after week, year after year.
And it’s contributing to conditions you do NOT want in your 20s:
- Pre-diabetes
- PCOS
- Hormonal imbalances
- Unexplained weight gain
- Chronic fatigue
I’m not saying throw your phone in the ocean. But here’s what actually helps:
→ Move for 10 minutes after eating, even just a walk around the block → Stand up every hour — set a reminder if you have to → Get your blood sugar checked, especially if you’re already feeling tired, foggy, and frustrated
Your metabolism isn’t broken. It’s responding to a lifestyle no generation has ever lived before.
The ultra-processed food trap
Here’s another uncomfortable truth:
More than half of your calories are probably coming from foods that are actively destroying your metabolism.
Fast food. Protein bars. Frozen meals. Energy drinks. Chips. Cereal.
Ultra-processed foods make up over 50% of what most young Americans eat. And these aren’t just “empty calories.” They’re metabolic sabotage.
Here’s what they do:
- They spike your blood sugar — triggering that insulin roller coaster
- They don’t keep you full — so you eat more, even when you don’t need to
- They mess with your gut — which directly affects your hormones
- They train your body to store fat and burn less
And here’s the kicker: This isn’t about willpower.
These foods are literally engineered to override your body’s natural hunger and fullness signals. Billions of dollars have been spent making them irresistible.
Gen Z, you grew up surrounded by this stuff. It’s in your school cafeterias, your convenience stores, your DoorDash orders. It’s not your fault.
But it IS affecting your health.
You don’t have to be perfect. But here’s what helps:
→ Protein first — eat it before carbs to blunt the glucose spike → More fiber — it slows digestion and stabilizes blood sugar → Less processed, more real — when you can, as often as you can
And if you’re doing everything “right” and still feel terrible? It might not be what you’re eating. It might be what’s happening inside.
PCOS? Nobody checked your thyroid. And that’s a problem.
This one’s for the women who just got diagnosed with PCOS.
Maybe you were put on birth control. Maybe you were told “just lose weight.” Maybe you left the appointment more confused than when you walked in.
But let me ask you something: Did anyone check your thyroid?
Here’s what most people don’t know:
PCOS and thyroid disorders are deeply connected.
Women with PCOS are three times more likely to have Hashimoto’s — an autoimmune thyroid condition.
If your thyroid isn’t checked first, you might be treating the wrong thing entirely.
When you have both conditions together — and many women do — everything feels worse:
- Weight is harder to lose
- Fertility gets more complicated
- Insulin resistance intensifies
- Fatigue becomes relentless
So if you have PCOS and you’ve never had thyroid testing — you’re missing a critical piece of the puzzle.
This isn’t about adding more pills. It’s about understanding what’s actually going on in your body.
The GLP-1 problem nobody’s talking about
Let’s address the elephant in the room: Ozempic. Wegovy. Mounjaro.
You’ve seen them everywhere. On TikTok. In the news. Maybe from a friend who “knows a guy.”
Here’s the deal:
These medications can be life-changing, when used correctly.
But right now? People are getting them from med spas, online mills, even leftover prescriptions from friends. No evaluation. No monitoring. No plan.
That’s not just irresponsible. It’s dangerous.
These are powerful medications. They:
- Change how your brain perceives hunger
- Slow your digestion significantly
- Can cause real side effects: nausea, vomiting, fatigue, muscle loss, gallbladder issues
And here’s the stat that should scare you:
If you stop taking them without a plan, the majority of people regain 60-75% of the weight within a year.
Meanwhile, 17 million young Americans actually qualify for these medications based on their health, but can’t access them properly because they don’t have a doctor guiding them.
The solution isn’t to avoid GLP-1s. It’s to use them correctly:
- With proper evaluation
- As part of a bigger plan
- Under the supervision of someone who actually understands metabolism
Not as a shortcut. Not from a med spa. Not from TikTok.
So what now?
If you’ve made it this far, you’re probably thinking: Okay, this all sounds like me. What do I actually do?
Here’s my advice:
1. Get your blood sugar checked. Not just fasting glucose — ask for fasting insulin and HbA1c too. These catch problems earlier.
2. Request a full thyroid panel. Especially if you have PCOS, unexplained fatigue, or weight issues. TSH alone isn’t enough.
3. Look at your lifestyle honestly. Screen time, processed foods, movement. Small changes compound over time.
4. Find a doctor who will actually listen. Not someone who gives you 5 minutes and a prescription. Someone who connects the dots.
That’s where I come in
I’m Dr. Lindsey Vandyke, board-certified in endocrinology and obesity medicine.
I trained in Southern California. Long Beach is still one of my favorite places I’ve ever lived. And I know firsthand how hard it is to find an endocrinologist who has time for you, especially if you’re young and everyone keeps saying “you’re fine.”
That’s why I built a practice designed to actually help.
At Advanced Institute for Diabetes and Endocrinology (AIDENDO), we:
- See new patients within two weeks, not six months
- Spend up to a full hour on first visits
- Look at the whole picture, not just one lab value
- Give you real answers, not guesses
And now? We’re available in California and six other states via telehealth.
CA • TX • CO • WA • OR • OK • NM
No waiting rooms. No rushed appointments. No dismissals.
Just real, comprehensive metabolic care, from your couch.
