Dr. Lindsey Van Dyke here. Let’s cut through the noise and hype surrounding supplements—especially those promising to boost your hormone health, thyroid function, adrenal wellness, and overall vitality. There are thousands of products on the market–it’s a multi BILLION dollar industry! But the truth is, not every supplement is created equal. And unfortunately, many can cause more harm than good if you don’t know what you’re doing.
I want to share with you the three supplements I truly care about, the ones I recommend based on solid science and my clinical experience. Ready? Let’s dive in.
1. Fiber: The Unsung Hero of Digestive and Metabolic Health
Fiber is unquestionably the most overlooked and most important part of almost every healthy diet. And yes, I mean fiber—three times, fiber, fiber, fiber!
Why all the fuss about fiber? Because fiber is your digestion’s best friend. When you eat enough fiber, it slows down your digestion, giving your body the time it needs to absorb nutrients properly and avoid blood sugar spikes. Fiber also feeds the beneficial bacteria living in your colon—think of it as a natural “pipe cleaner” for your gut.
This matters for so many aspects of your health:
- A healthy gut microbiome supported by fiber plays a key role in immune function, mental health, and inflammation regulation.
- Fiber helps you feel full longer, which assists in weight management and prevents overeating without starving yourself.
- It slows the rise in blood sugar after meals, which is crucial for preventing insulin resistance and managing diabetes risk.
Despite all these benefits, most people don’t get nearly enough fiber each day. We need 25-38 grams daily! It’s incredible but true, and making fiber intake a priority is one of the simplest, most beneficial actions you can take.
2. Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin You May Actually Need
Vitamin D is next on my list—but here’s the kicker: it’s only for people who are actually deficient.
Vitamin D plays a fundamental role in bone metabolism, immune health, muscle function, and even mood regulation. When your vitamin D levels are too low, it can cause fatigue, weakness, depressive feelings and increased risk for fractures and chronic disease.
The good news? You probably don’t need to rely on pills if you can get regular sunlight. Just 15 minutes in the sun daily can produce adequate vitamin D for many people. However, depending on where you live, your skin type, lifestyle, and the season, supplementation may be necessary. Most people can meet their vitamin D needs with just 1000-2000 IU daily.
The only time I recommend vitamin D supplements is when lab testing confirms you are deficient. There’s no point in taking it “just in case.” Overdosing on vitamin D can lead to health problems, so always get blood work and consult your doctor first.
3. Multivitamins: Are They Really Necessary?
I get asked all the time: “Do I need a multivitamin?”
Here’s the short answer: If you eat a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole foods, you probably do not need a multivitamin.
If you feel you might benefit from a multivitamin, don’t overcomplicate it. You don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy blends. In my clinical experience, any affordable multivitamin—like those from Costco or your local pharmacy—will suffice. There really isn’t strong evidence that one multivitamin is significantly better than others.
What matters more is focusing on your overall diet rather than relying heavily on pills. Real nutrition comes from food, and supplements should only fill in small gaps after testing and evaluation.

Final Thoughts
In the sea of supplement marketing, it’s essential to know what’s really helpful and when you should be cautious. Fiber, vitamin D (if deficient), and simple multivitamins top the list of accessible, evidence-backed supplements worth your attention.
Remember, supplements are supplements—they aren’t a cure-all, and they don’t replace a healthy diet, regular exercise, or expert medical care.
Always consult your endocrinologist before beginning any new supplement, especially if you have hormone issues, thyroid conditions, or adrenal concerns. Your health is your most valuable asset—invest in it wisely.
