The holidays are here — and if you live with diabetes, this season can feel like walking into a metabolic obstacle course.
Travel.
Different schedules.
More alcohol.
More desserts.
Less sleep.
But let me say this clearly, as an endocrinologist:
➡️ The holidays are not a metabolic emergency.
➡️ You do not need perfect blood sugar to have a successful season.
➡️ Don’t be afraid to see your endo in January!
What you do need is a plan.
In a recent video I recorded while traveling in Amsterdam — surrounded by stroopwafels, Christmas markets, and holiday indulgences — I reminded my diabetes patients of the goal we actually care about:
70% time-in-range or better.
Not perfection.
Not punishment.
Not fear.
That flexibility is what allows you to enjoy your life and protect your A1C.
Why the Holidays Hit Blood Sugar So Hard
December is different — and your glucose knows it.
During the holidays:
- Meals are larger and later
- Carbohydrate density is higher
- Alcohol intake increases
- Routines disappear
- Stress and cortisol rise
Even patients who are normally well controlled often see:
- Bigger CGM swings
- More post-meal spikes
- Higher fasting numbers
This doesn’t mean you’re “doing diabetes wrong.”
It means you’re human.
The Key Shift: Strategy Over Restriction
Most holiday diabetes advice boils down to:
❌ “Just don’t eat that”
❌ “Avoid all carbs”
❌ “Wait until January”
That approach fails — every time.
What does work is strategic flexibility:
- Preloading meals with protein
- Using fat and fiber to slow absorption
- Timing meals more intentionally
- Letting your CGM guide decisions — not judge them
With even a little planning, you can dramatically reduce glucose excursions without skipping the foods and moments that make the holidays meaningful.
Why I Created the Holiday Diabetes Survival Guide
I created this free guide because I kept hearing the same thing from patients:
“I wish someone had explained this before the holidays.”
So I put everything I teach in clinic — in one fast, realistic, doctor-approved resource.
